Global Shapers Community Uyo

Problem Statement: The excessive and improper disposal of plastic waste, particularly PET bottles, on university campuses in Uyo poses a significant threat to the environment and public health. This issue is exacerbated by ineffective waste management practices, leading to pollution of air, soil, and water bodies.

Target Group: The primary target group for the Green Campus Project is the student and faculty community of Uyo’s tertiary educational institutions, including:

Undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Lecturers, professors, administrators, and other staff members

Proposed Solution: The Green Campus Project aims to address plastic waste and emissions in three university campuses in Uyo by implementing a comprehensive approach that combines PET bottle collection, campus-wide recycling programs, and public awareness campaigns. This approach promotes a circular economy and sustainable waste management practices.

The Uyo Hub will employ a multi-faceted approach to implement the Green Campus Project:

Awareness and Education Campaigns

Promote waste reduction and segregation

Campus recycling

Stakeholder engagement and partnerships

Partnerships

Monitoring and Evaluation

Data-Driven Decision Making

Scalability

Long-term Sustainability

Project Goals:

Short-term Goals:

Drive behavioral change among students and faculty towards plastic-free campuses.

Raise awareness about the impact of plastic pollution and improper waste management.

Medium-term Goal:

Establish a network of PET bottle collection bins across university campuses.

Long-term Goal:

Develop a replicable model for sustainable university waste management in Akwa Ibom State that diverts waste from landfills, reduces greenhouse emissions and contributes to a circular economy in Akwa Ibom State.

Project Metrics:

Quantity of PET Bottles Collected: Tracking the volume of PET bottles collected through the collection scheme.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction: Estimating the potential reduction in GHG emissions through a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) model.

Student Engagement and Behavior Change: Assessing changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors through pre- and post-project surveys.

Project Replication: Monitoring the adoption of the Green Campus model by other universities in Akwa Ibom State.
